Christina's Stylist Trish Sommerville:
Clothes Ties
When it comes to getting Christina Aguilera red
carpet ready, no one knows what a girl wants (or what a girl needs)
better than her personal stylist Trish Sommerville. We chatted
up the wardrobe warrior to find out what it takes to keep Christina
looking great on stage and off.
On The Job: 'I started working with
Christina in June or July 2000. I got the job through word of mouth.
At first we just sat down and got to know one another. It's really
important for her to be able to trust me and let me dress her. I
don't want to force my taste on her, but I will sit and tell her
I think this is cool because of this and I think this would look
good on her because of this.'
The Look: 'We're trying to keep her sexy, but
classy. Christina wants to look real and she's also somebody who
doesn't like to take hours and hours to get ready.'
Best Assets: 'Christina has such
a great little body that it's easy to do clothes for her. She's
really tiny, but she's proportionately tiny. She's got a good butt
and curves Ñ it's that Latin thing. She feels her best asset is
her tummy so she always shows her little tummy off.'
Stage Presence: 'Leather reads so much better
than regular fabrics on stage so we always do leather-tight, but
not so tight that it rips. I'm also into the cutouts to keep the
leather looking interesting. And of course you have to add some
sparkle, but we try not to overdo it with the rhinestone-bedazzling
thing.'
A Wardrobe Is Born: 'I did all the outfits for Christina's tour. First I did sketches and sat down and talked about them with her. Then I made up muslins - samples in a cheaper fabrication. Next came the fitting. We went through the muslins and did any pinning necessary and made changes. I drew in where I wanted the detailing and had a leather person make up the clothes. Then I went to the first three shows on the tour to figure out how the outfits were working.'
Public Scrutiny: 'It was disappointing for Christina
to be voted one of 'People Magazine's 10 Worst-Dressed Celebs'.
But if you look at who's voting, it's usually people who are over
45 who want glamour, glamour, glamour. Christina is 19. If she were
a normal person, she'd be shopping at a mall. Thank God none of
us are watched everyday for what we have on.'
Risky Business: 'We worry about what the other
celebrities are going to wear to a big event. If we're putting Christina
in red for a big awards show, we hope nobody else is going to show
up in red - especially Britney (Spears). But they're such differently
shaped girls with their own kind of style.'
She's No Mariah: 'I've been lucky enough that
Christina is very easy to deal with and doesn't demand that we have
20 things on hold. She's not a label slave at all. I could buy something
thrifty or at Target, and if it was cute and cool, she'd wear it.'
