Christina's Personal Stylist Steve Sollitto:
Inside Beauty with Christina
Recently, Christina's fans submitted questions
for Steve Sollitto, Christina's stylist, who was nice enough
to sit down with us and share some of his exclusive hair and makeup
secrets.
This is the first of hopefully many columns
and tips from Steve. Here we go...
How long have you been working for Christina
and what exactly do you do?
Steve: I've been working with Christina
since June 2000. I toured with Christina doing her Hair and Makeup
for her first headlining tour. Now I'm part of a team of Makeup
artists and Hair stylists that work with her for award shows, publicity
events, and videos.
Christina's hair always looks so pretty,
especially when it is curly. What do you put in it to keep the ringlets
separated?
Steve: I used to put in Sebastian
Shaper hair spray to keep her ringlets separated, but I recently
switched to KMS spray gel, just because it was easier to work with
(not as sticky). I still use the Shaper hair spray when I'm finished
curling.
In the 'What A Girl Wants' video, Christina's
hair is so shiny - is it a special shampoo or spray?
Steve: In the 'What A. Girl Wants'
video I didn't do her hair, but I'm sure it was flat ironed to make
it look straight and shiny. A flat iron is like a curling iron,
but instead of making curls, it straightens hair. I got her Montage
Head Games shampoo and conditioner and she loves it. That's what
she uses now.
For Christina's tour I noticed that she
had jewels on her forehead. What were they exactly and did Christina
request them to be arranged in a certain way?
Steve: Christina did have jewels
on her forehead for each show on tour. They were small rhinestones
that I glued on each night with eyelash glue you can get anywhere.
You can get the jewels at beauty supply stores or craft stores.
Christina let me design the jewels each night. I usually made a
vertical line in-between her eyebrows, but sometimes I did them
in a diamond formation. We mostly used clear diamond-looking jewels,
but sometimes I added colors to try them out, like purples, blues,
and teals.
Christina's eyes always look so deep
and intense with the black around her eyes. How can I get that look?
Steve: To get Christina's deep and
intense eye look you can use any black liner. Take the pencil (Try
Elizabeth Arden's black pencil) draw a line all around the eye as
close to the lashes as you can. After take a small makeup brush
and brush over the line to blend it softly.
Christina's skin always looks so fresh
and clean. Do you recommend a certain cleanser and body wash?
Steve: Christina's skin looks fresh
and clean because she faithfully takes off her makeup at night and
washes with Noxema. As for body wash she has a million different
types that she alternates.
I love all of Christina's outfits and
I would love to own them. Where can I buy her outfits or are they
especially made for her? I love the 'Genie In A Bottle' look and
could never find the pants or shirt.
Steve: Most all of Christina's outfits
are designed by her clothing stylist Trish Sommerville. Trish is
so sweet and also a good friend of Christina's. Trish does use designers
on Christina like Varla Vortex leather, Versace, and practically
anything at Fred Segals Store here in LA.
In the video 'I Turn to You,' Christina's
hair and makeup is so simple yet elegant. What did you use? Also
in the 'Come On Over Baby' video and in the Spanish version Christina
has bellyjewels and jewels on her forehead. How long did it take
to apply them?
Steve: In the video 'I Turn to You'
and 'Come On Over Baby' I hadn't met Christina yet, but I do know
that a makeup artist named Joanne Gair here in LA did her belly
jewels. Joanne is known for her beautiful body makeup and is also
very quick to apply the jewels, but it still takes about a half
hour because she applies them individually. By the way Joanne is
the master makeup artist behind Christina's 'Lady Marmalade' video.
Does Christina give you input or do you
have full control and freedom to create her look?
Steve: Christina does give me input
on how she wants to look for a certain event. Many times I'll either
cut out pictures from books or magazines or just draw makeup looks
I want to try and then we'll talk about it. She's very creative
but also lets me be very creative with her.
Love, Steve. :)
